LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Antwon Brown, the man accused of punching Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, pleaded not guilty to one count of assault.
A public defender is representing Brown. His bond was lowered from $25,00 to $5,000 cash Wednesday at Jefferson County District Court. Judge Sheila Connor ordered Brown not to have contact with Mayor Fischer or visit Fourth Street Live!.
Brown returns to court Thursday, June 30 for a pre-trial hearing.
Mayor Fischer said Tuesday after a news conference he was not seriously hurt in the incident. According to the court report, Brown is accused of walking up to Fischer Saturday at Fourth Street Live! and hitting him in the lower portion of his face and neck. The mayor fell backwards after receiving the unprovoked blow.
Louisville Metro Police used video surveillance to track Brown back to his apartment.
30-year-old Brown was arrested in Louisville without incident. He is charged with one count of assault, but LMPD says the investigation is ongoing.
Brown’s arrest came hours after Mayor Fischer spoke for the first time to reporters about the incident. Fischer said, “I’m not going to stop doing my job and look, I’ve been mayor for eleven and a half years. This is the first time anything like this has happened, so it’s a real outlier. So what’s important to me is I understand what the people of Louisville need and one of the best ways for me to do that is to get out and about and see the different events in our community.”
Fischer wasn’t seriously injured in the attack. He said it was an unusual situation and said his security team handled it well.
LMPD released several pictures of the suspect, believed to be Brown, and they praised media outlets for sharing it.
