LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Taking the Second Street Bridge next week to evade toll bridges may come with some hefty traffic delays. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) on Thursday announced lane closures would soon begin for inspections on the bridge connecting downtown Louisville with southern Indiana.
What You Need To Know
- Bridge inspections will bring single-lane closures to the Second Street Bridge next week
- The Clark Memorial Bridge is approaching 100 years old and was built in 1929
- Federal regulators require the inspection every two years
Motorists should expect single-lane closures on the four-lane George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge starting Monday, June 20, KYTC said. Inspections on the cantilevered truss structure should run through Friday, June 24.
The Clark Memorial Bridge is approaching 100 years old and was built in 1929. The arguably-narrow bridge received a new coat of gold paint in recent years.
Inspections will begin on the north side of the bridge where it meets Jeffersonville, Indiana, before moving south later in the week, according to KYTC officials.
Federal regulators require the inspection every two years, KYTC said. The effort could also produce two nights of overnight closure along I-64 where the interstate passes under the Second Street Bridge.
"Drivers should use caution, expect delays, and heed signage while traveling through the work zone," officials said in a release. "The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur."
