LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Animal Care Society, a no-kill animal shelter in Louisville, has welcomed in a new executive director.
Megan Gonterman comes into the position with more than 14 years of experience. She’s been in her new role for just under two weeks, moving here from her home state of Indiana.
While she is still getting settled in, she’s spending her time shadowing volunteers and getting a better perspective on how everything runs.
Gonterman said she’s quickly learned how much the Louisville community supports their mission. She said people bring in donations daily.
Bags of food and other essentials keep the place running.
“We can’t continue to do what we do without the community,” Gonterman said.
It’s a packed house at the shelter with more than 30 animals up for adoption. You’ll have a hard time finding a room without at least one furry friend inside.
While this means it’s never really that quiet, Gonterman says she doesn’t mind the noise. Her office even overlooks the dog kennels outside.
“Sometimes you’ll see their little heads peek up or sometimes they will get real loud, so I’ll just look up and see and make sure nothing is happening,” Gonterman said.
Some of her priorities for the shelter include bringing more awareness to their work and increasing adoptions.
Founded in the 80s, the nonprofit was the first no-kill shelter in Louisville. In the decades since, strong community ties have ensured that hundreds of animals are cared for and eventually reach their forever homes.
People who are interested in donating can drop off pet food and supplies in person.
