LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A 50-year-old inmate at the Louisville Metro jail died after being found unresponsive late Sunday night.

LMDC Assistant Director Steve Durham confirmed the death in a press release sent to Spectrum News. The inmate, whose name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified, was found unresponsive around 11:30 p.m.
Metro EMS was called after corrections officers and on-site medical staff attempted life-saving efforts, which were unsuccessful.
Sunday night's death marks the 8th inmate death at Metro Corrections since November 2021, with the most recent occurring in early March.
The inmate was booked into Metro Corrections back in May 2020 on charges including assault and burglary.
“The Louisville Metro Police’s Public Integrity Unit is investigating, a standard procedure, and Metro Corrections Director, Dwayne Clark, has directed Metro Corrections Professional Standards Unit to conduct a review of the case,” Durham said.
Last week, Mayor Greg Fischer named Lt. Col. Jerry Collins the new director of Metro Corrections after former director Dwayne Clark announced his retirement amid ongoing investigations into the trend of jail deaths. Collins is currently the jail commander of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.
