The award is part of $409.3 million in grant funding approved for 70 projects across 39 states to improve, modernize and electrify America's buses. The FTA received over $2.5 billion in funding requests, officials said.
Funds totalling $4,107,642 will be used by Lextran to "replace buses that have exceeded their useful life," according to the FTA. The replacement vehicles will reduce maintenance costs and improve reliability for residents in St. Martins Village, Galberith, and surrounding neighborhoods, including services to Lexington.
"These grants will help people in communities large and small get to work, get to school, and access the services they need," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. "Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable, clean public transportation – and thanks to the President’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are bringing modern buses to communities across America."
Lextran operates 25 unique routes in the greater Lexington area, with ridership nearing 4 million in 2020 along its 896 bus stops.
