FOP President Daniel Johnson said the apparent suicide happened around midnight. According to the incident report, an officer making the rounds found the person unresponsive in their cell.

Corrections staff attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. Johnson said the rescue tool, referred to as the "knife for life," that Corrections staff tried to use to save the inmate was too dull and hadn't been maintained after being put in the nearby control room 15 years ago.

Sunday's death marks the sixth since November 2021. It comes around a week after three Metro Council members drafted a resolution to express "no confidence" in Metro Corrections Director Dwayne Clark and his executive staff.

The FBI in December 2021 announced they would investigate a recent death at the jail, though it wasn't specified which death would be investigated.

The ACLU of Kentucky has called for county officials to review bonds to lower or eliminate them in some cases, and for leaders to direct LMPD to issue citations for low-level offenses instead of making arrests.
