LEXINGTON, Ky. — More than a thousand Kentucky homes remained without power as of Friday afternoon as crews work to restore services. Many families are surviving through the cold temperatures, waiting to warm up their homes.

For one Lexington family, Friday started with no power.

“I just come out here try to like clean off the car a little,” said Austin Currens, an Idle Hour resident. “I’m not sure how the roads are out there right now when they’re going to get the power back on, but I have three cats, so they’ve kept me warm.”

His mom, Terry, said she woke up at 6 a.m. Friday to a frigid house.

“It’s 55 in here. It’s cold. I run a fan and I always have and I woke up because it wasn’t running. I woke up and told Austin [the] power’s off. It was 6 a.m.” Terry said. 

This isn’t the first time they’ve gone without power. Terry remembers the awful ice storm of 2009 far too well.

“I remember the other ice storm. It was a week [without power],” Terry said.

This time around, Terry prepared for the worst.

“I was ready for it. I fixed food and at least it’s cooked,” Terry said.

They stocked meals in her refrigerator to last for a couple of days, just in case they lost power for more than just a few hours.

“Chicken nuggets, and I made potato salad and yeah, I was ready for it. Cats ready. Heated it up, cooked it so that all you had to do… Cold’s better than nothing,” Terry said.

Up and down the streets in Lexington’s Idle Hour neighborhood, power returned early Friday afternoon for around 200 people who kept busy scraping off snow and ice, waiting to return to a warm home.

“We just deal with things and make it through,” Terry said.

As of Friday afternoon, the Kentucky Utilities Power Outage map shows a couple of other Lexington neighborhoods remain without power, and it’s affecting a dozen or fewer homes.

KU said downed tree limbs caused the power outage in Lexington’s Idle Hour neighborhood.
