  • Hughes says she initially stayed in her car, then a hotel in Paducah, and most recently at her sisters

Thankfully, neither 30-year-old Molly Hughes nor her 6-year-old son were home when an EF-4 tornado destroyed their Mayfield home on Dec. 10, 2021.

“You can see there was part of another house in the TV," Hughes explained.

Her home is one of the countless number of homes in Mayfield that can’t be saved. On Thursday, multiple homes were being demolished including Hughes. She says too much damage was done to the foundation.

“It’s on that back corner of there. There is so much damage to it…bricks pushed in and pulled out. You can’t repair that," Hughes said.

It's been nearly 50 days since 22 people were killed in Mayfield and hundreds of homes were impacted. In the days following the storm, Hughes says she stayed in her car, eventually she was provided a hotel in Paducah but since school resumed she's been staying with her older sister Barbara Anderson.

“Exactly. What are big sisters for?" Anderson said.  “And like there is no place for people to live in Mayfield anymore. It’s pretty much a disaster."

Hughes says she’s lined up to receive a live-in trailer purchased by the state. The trailers were delivered to the Mayfield Mobile Home Park on Thursday.

Gov. Andy Beshear is expected to speak at an event their on Friday afternoon. Similar trailers are being placed at Pennyrile Forrest State Park near Dawson Springs.

“I swore that we would stay in this house for the rest our lives, this would be our home and we wouldn’t move again," Hughes said. "The mobile home park is about one mile to the north of where her home stands now or whats left of it."
