KENTUCKY — A heavy band of snow is expected to coat central and eastern Kentucky with several inches of accumulation this weekend, and Gov. Andy Beshear is urging caution for travelers.

What You Need To Know

  • More snow is headed to Kentucky

  • The winter storm is expected to impact central and eastern Kentucky for the most part

  • Other regions should expect some light accumulation

  • KYTC crews have been prepping many roads for the incoming storm

Wet, heavy snow – possibly mixed with some sleet and freezing rain – will be possible all-day Sunday, creating an opportunity for power outages in the southern and eastern portions of the state.

You can track hazardous road conditions here.

The main system will be arriving from the south by early Sunday morning with organized snow bands that will enter central and eastern Kentucky by the later morning and early afternoon hours. Snow showers will last across this region till the later evening time. A winter storm watch has been issued across Central Kentucky from Sunday morning into late Sunday night.

Snow accumulations of 3-8 inches are expected in the eastern region of the state, south of the Bluegrass and Western Kentucky parkways.

As for the rest of Kentucky, the stretch from Paducah towards Covington, along the Ohio River cities, will see less snowfall accumulations with values not exceeding 2 inches. Regions to the southwest of Lexington towards Bowling Green can expect 2-4 inches of accumulation.

“Kentuckians should take time now to plan and prepare for the pending weather, so that we can keep as many people as possible off the roads overnight Saturday and Sunday,” Gov. Beshear said. “If you must travel, please drive slowly.”

Crews across the state have been readying equipment, stockpiling salt and ensuring plows and salt spreaders are in good, working order. Beshear said crews also have been pre-treating roads in a few districts with a brine spray.

KYTC suggests limiting travel on Sunday to only what's necessary and to give snow plows and crews plenty of room on the road.
