WALTON — It's a moment in history many Kentuckians won't forget. Those in the Bluegrass State get to reflect on where they were when they heard of all the damage to many communities on the western half of the state. For Greg Buckler, he was on call Saturday morning.
“I was listening to everything, watching my emails, and I knew they got hit pretty hard down there," Buckler said.
He's the deputy director of administration with Campbell County Office of Emergency Management. Now, he's heading to Mayfield. It's team of eight- firefighters, law enforcement, and emergency management met up at the Walton Fire Protection District Monday morning to hit the road together. Buckler said they'll be working in emergency operations.
“Some of the things that we’ll be doing- we’ll be doing some of the operational periods, what they expect over the next twelve hours. We’ll be doing logistics if they ask for resources out of Frankfort, from the state or anything like that. We’ll be making those requests for them while working in the emergency operations center," Buckler said.
It's something that could be a two week deployment for this team. Buckler said they're planning on sleeping on cots they've brought at Murray State University while they work.
But this isn't Buckler's first deployment. He's said he's been deployed to South Carolina in the past to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. He's also helped eastern Kentucky recently in the year with flooding.
“But it’s very humbling. It’s always nice to see how people appreciate us showing up and helping them out and everything," he said.
Buckler also said another team is being prepped in Northern Kentucky in case more help is needed.
