LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville director of athletics Vince Tyra has officially resigned from his role.

UofL is now in search of a new president and athletics director after a tumultuous day of staff announcements.

What You Need To Know

  • Louisville athletics director Vince Tyra has resigned

  • His resignation comes one day after changes to his 2018 contract removed non-compete and 30-day notice clauses

  • Tyra resigned hours after UofL President Neeli Bendapudi accepted a role at Penn State

  • Tyra's name was floated for the open AD position at FSU, but he's reportedly turned down the role

The university has received Tyra's resignation letter and it was effective Dec. 8, according to Louisville's head of media relations John Karman. As of Thursday afternoon, no interim AD had been named.

On Wednesday, UofL's board of trustees approved several key changes to Tyra's contract which was originally signed in March 2018. The changes released Tyra from a non-compete clause and voided the required 30-day termination notice.

Tyra's name had been mentioned to fill the open AD position with Florida State University, an ACC rival to the Cardinals. But he's reportedly turned down the offer, according to multiple sources.

News of Tyra's resignation broke just hours after UofL President Neeli Bendapudi announced she accepted a position as president at Penn State.

Bendapudi was named the 18th president of UofL in April of 2018. She was hired away from the University of Kansas, where she served as provost, executive vice chancellor, and dean of the business school.

Today's changes leave Louisville with neither a president nor athletic director, which could mean significant changes are in store for the future of Louisville athletics.

It's unclear at the moment where Tyra is headed. Friday morning, Tyra released a letter to Louisville fans on all of his social media platforms.

Tyra was named interim Athletics Director at UofL in 2017. He was officially named AD in March 2018. During his time at UofL, he has made two high-profile head coaching hires, Scott Satterfield for football and Chris Mack for men's basketball. Tyra has also had to deal with the FBI and NCAA allegations against the men's basketball team.

The now-former AD is from Louisville, having graduated from Trinity High School and the University of Kentucky. His father Charlie Tyra played basketball for the Cardinals and was a consensus All-America at UofL.
