LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After three days of meetings, the University of Louisville board of trustees has approved changes to Director of Athletics Vince Tyra's contract, essentially clearing the way for him to pursue other jobs.
Tyra's name has been mentioned to fill the open athletic director position with Florida State University.
Wednesday, the board of trustees approved several key changes to Tyra's contract which was originally signed in March 2018. The first change is with regard to notice. Under the approved amendment, Tyra doesn't have to provide 30 days written notice to UofL if he wants to end his employment.
The noncompete clause in his contract was removed from the agreement. It said Tyra couldn't leave UofL for another Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team. By getting rid of the clause, it clears the way for Tyra to pursue the FSU job.
Another amendment revolves around litigation UofL Athletics is currently involved with. UofL men's basketball program is working through a case with the NCAA. The amendment in Tyra's contract stipulates he will provide "reasonable cooperation and support in connection with any litigation, administrative actions, investigations or other legal matters ..." UofL is involved with. Tyra also agreed, unless compelled by law, to not speak with attorneys or other parties against the University without first giving the school two weeks notice. The school agreed to reimburse Tyra for any travel, preparation or participation fees he might incur related to litigation, investigations or other legal matters.
Lastly there is no compensation to the university for the changes.
Tyra was named interim Athletics Director at UofL in 2017. He was officially named AD in March 2018. During his time at UofL, he has made two high-profile head coaching hires, Scott Satterfield for football and Chris Mack for men's basketball. Tyra has also had to deal with the FBI and NCAA allegations against the men's basketball team.
Tyra is from Louisville having graduated from Trinity High School and the University of Kentucky. His father Charlie Tyra played basketball for the Cardinals and was a consensus All-America at UofL.
