LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Former University of Louisville assistant men's basketball coach Dino Guadio is facing federal extortion charges according to just released court documents.

What You Need To Know

  • A federal indictment accuses former UofL assistant basketball coach Dino Guadio of extortion

  • The indictment claims Gaudio demanded money or else he would release information about alleged NCAA recruiting violations in the program

  • Gaudio joined Chris Mack's staff in 2018

  • The pair have worked together at three schools Xavier, Wake Forest and Louisville

In a federal indictment, acting United States Attorney Michael Bennett said Guadio tried to "extort money and other things of value" from the University of Louisville in exchange for not releasing information about alleged recruiting violations by the university to the National College Athletic Association (NCAA). The indictment doesn't specify the “other things of value” he was requesting. Gaudio claims in the indictment the school violated NCAA rules in its production of basketball recruiting videos for prospective student-athletes and its use of graduate assistants during practices.

The indictment alleges that Guadio met with UofL personnel on March 17 and asked for his salary for an additional 17 months, or a lump sum equal to 17 months of pay. Later that same day, Gaudio allegedly sent a text including one of the videos he was threatening to send to the media unless he received the money he was asking for, according to the document.  The text was sent from Kentucky and sent out of state, which is a federal offense.

UofL men's basketball coach Chris Mack released this statement through the university, “While I cannot comment on the details or substance of the matter, I am grateful for the professionalism of members of law enforcement and the United States Attorney’s Office. The University and I were the victims of Coach Gaudio’s conduct and I will continue to fully cooperate with authorities in their investigations. We take seriously any allegation of NCAA violations within our basketball program and will work within the NCAA processes to fully review the allegations.”

Gaudio joined Mack's staff in 2018 after having been out of the men's basketball game for eight years. Prior to coming to UofL, Gaudio was a basketball analyst for ESPN. Before his television career, Gaudio was the head coach at Wake Forest from 2007-2010. He was also an assistant at Xavier University in Ohio. Gaudio and Coach Mack had a relationship that went back three decades and three schools, Xavier, Wake Forest and Louisville.

UofL also released a statement that recapped much of what was said in the indictment. It read, “This afternoon, the United States Attorney’s Office of Western Kentucky charged former University of Louisville assistant men’s basketball coach Dino Gaudio with 'interstate communication with intent to extort' related to the nonrenewal of his contract with the University. As detailed in the charging document, after Gaudio was informed that his contract would not be renewed, he threatened to inform members of the media of alleged NCAA violations within the men’s basketball program unless he was paid a significant sum of money. The allegations of violations are the impermissible production of recruiting videos for prospective student-athletes and the impermissible use of graduate managers in practices and workouts. While the University cannot comment further due to the ongoing federal investigation and the NCAA process, it continues to cooperate with authorities as well as with the NCAA on the matter.”

The university announced contracts for Gaudio and another assistant coach, Luke Murray would not be renewed March 18 — a day after the encounter spelled out in the indictment.

Gaudio has not released a statement regarding the charges. Spectrum News 1 will continue to seek comment.
