LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Citing concerns over the continued spread of COVID-19 in Kentucky, Louisville Public Media has canceled the remaining two WFPK Waterfront Wednesday shows.
The organization made the announcement Thursday afternoon. The annual, free outdoor concert series draws thousands to the Louisville area and often features acts both locally and nationally-known. Dawn Richards and Low Cut Connie were set to headline the final two 2021 shows.
“This was a difficult decision, especially because it felt so good to be together with our community after more than a year of lockdown and pandemic isolation,” Louisville Public Media President Stephen George said in a media release. “At this critical moment in the pandemic, we need to prioritize the safety of the artists, staff and the public.”

Louisville Public Media's 2020 iteration of Waterfront Wednesday was put on hold, as mass gatherings weren't allowed at the time. Organizers were optimistic that outdoor music events could take place safely, but COVID-19 has continued to ravage the Commonwealth, fueled largely by the delta variant – the contagious mutation of the novel coronavirus.
As of Wednesday, Sept. 1, state numbers showed 2,267 Kentuckians were hospitalized with COVID-19. 644 were in the ICU and 410 were on a ventilator.
