The upcoming flight in October will be the first trip for the organization in two years because of the coronavirus pandemic. It will also be the only one this year.
The goal of the honor flights is to take veterans to Washington, D.C. to view their respective war memorials.
“It’s often life changing to the veterans. Often many, many times we hear from our veterans it is one of the best days of their life,” said Jeff Thoke or Honor Flight Bluegrass.
Honor Flight Bluegrass is looking for Kentucky WWII veterans who want to make the trip Oct. 20, as they are the oldest living veterans. Thoke said he knows of a 97-year-old veteran who wants to fly out this year.
The organization will be prioritizing WWII veterans because, for many, this could be their last chance to go. Since the pandemic began, Thoke said he knows they have lost at least 35 veterans who had expressed interest in making the trip.
To sign a veteran up, you can apply on the Honor Flight Bluegrass website or by calling 1-888-998-1941. The deadline to apply for the Oct. 20 flight is Sept. 7.
You can also apply to go on the trip as a guardian for veterans who may not have a family member to go with them, or as a volunteer.
