Some chose to get the COVID-19 vaccine as part of this year’s back-to-school preparation.

“One subject notebook, a folder,” said Xavier Wolsing, a Jessie Clark Middle School student.

He is walking up and down the aisles hunting for school supplies.

“It’s just something about shopping for school things, I don't know, it’s kind of fun. Maybe because I know that I might actually use it. All this stuff. I bet that’s probably it,” Xavier said.

It’s an activity Wolsing looks forward to as he fills his cart with pencils, scissors, pens and more.

The decisions continue based on his preferences. This year, he’s looking forward to his language arts class the most.

His mother Jennifer explained that last year, they shopped for supplies to be ready.

“I would say last year we did pretty much the same thing, we got the same list from the school and we went ahead, went here and got the same sort of things. The main difference was Xavier was wearing a mask and so was I, and this time, we’re not having to wear a mask. But it was the same sort of stuff and eventually we used it, it was used at home rather than used a school,” Jennifer said.

While Xavier scratches off each item of his list, he wraps up his shopping experience and then the family heads to his middle school. They stepped into the gym for a COVID-19 vaccine.

“Yeah so now it’s kinda weird. I never saw...I don't know, I've never gotten a vaccination in my school. I guess it’s just new,” Xavier said.

He received his first dose inserted into his arm which is all part of his back-to-school preparation.

“Obviously we’re not out of the woods yet, but I felt a great sense of relief not only when I got my vaccine but especially when Xavier got his because to me, the more people who keep getting their vaccine, the better off we’re going to be. The closer we get to the end of the pandemic and we get towards resuming to a more normal existence,” Jennifer said.
