COVINGTON, Ky. — Drivers in Covington may be delayed Tuesday when giant beams make their way through town.

Three 117-foot-long trucks will carefully maneuver through the downtown area Tuesday morning as they deliver a trio of 96,000-lb. concrete beams for the new pedestrian bridge. Each beam is 90-fee, 3 inches long. The bridge is going up over the railroad tracks at 11th Street. 

The bridge is part of $777,000 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet project that will replace the pedestrian bridge and remove a vehicular bridge that has been closed since 2013 because of crumbling concrete and rust. Louisville Paving and Construction started the project in March 2021. 

Local traffic will be affected as the large truck work their way through town. Parking will be prohibited near intersections along the route. There will be signs alerting drivers. 

The Prestress Transportation trucks are slated to leave Lexington at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in Covington between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Be aware that maintenance work on the Brent Spence Bridge could delay the arrival. 

The route

The trucks will arrive in Covington at the 12th Street exit, head north on Simon Kenton Way, east on Pike Street, east on West Seventh, south on Scott Street, west on West 10th Street and north on Washington Street, where a crane will unload them. 

The second and third trucks will “stage” on Simon Kenton Way and be released on a schedule that gives the drivers time to maneuver the route.

The trucks will be escorted by vehicles and “scouts.” 

Cars that ignore the no-parking signs will be towed. The signs will be removed after the last truck passes.
