Investigators believe Officer Ellis was cleaning brush off the side of the road just minutes away from his home on May 25, 2013, when he was ambushed and shot to death. Eight years later, no one has been arrested.

“I believe that there is some reason that God has not allowed for this case to be solved yet. I don’t know why. I don’t question that. I just continue to put my trust in him. That is the one thing that has really gotten me where I am today.

Officer Ellis’ mother-in-law, Kris Bratten, says he wanted to make a difference, and should be remembered as an example of the perfect police officer.

“He stood between good and evil. He stood for what was right,” Bratten said. “And I think more than ever today, I want that to be what everybody thinks about: he stood between good and evil.”
