FRANKFORT, Ky. — Easing coronavirus restrictions, closing the largest mass vaccination site in the state and marking the kick-off of Memorial Day weekend. It’s shaping up to be a busy week in the Commonwealth. 

The Fayette County School Board is expected to name finalists for the superintendent position. This comes following the death of Manny Caulk in December. The search for a new superintendent began in mid-January. Three to five candidates will be announced Monday before the public has a chance to hear from the finalists later this week. 

The Fayette County Board of Education is also expected to weigh in on whether or not to allow a "re-do" year for the 523 students in the district who requested one. Students who requested the supplemental year, which was made possible through Senate Bill 128, include 167 elementary students, 114 middle school students and 242 high school students.

The Jefferson County Board of Education is also expected to weigh in on whether or not it will allow students a "re-do" year. Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) said about 770 families requested a supplemental year. That accounts for less than 1% of the district’s student population.

Under state law, school boards can either accept or deny all students who request a supplemental year. That decision is up to each school board. Districts have until June 1 to decide.

Discussions over the Louisville Metro budget continue this week. The focus this week is on funding for libraries and first responders. Those discussions happen all week, but Thursday marks an opportunity for the public to weigh in on the nearly billion-dollar budget proposal. That public hearing takes place at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Kentucky lifts its curfew on bars and restaurants Friday. Also on Friday, businesses and events with 1,000 people or less can increase capacity to 75%. The current capacity is limited to 60%.

On this same day, the largest mass vaccination site in the Commonwealth is set to close. It will mark the final day of vaccinations at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. While this change comes as fewer Kentuckians are going to get a vaccine, UofL Health said that is not why it is closing the site. It was always scheduled to be open for a limited time.

As Memorial Day weekend marks the “unofficial” start of summer, public pools in Louisville, Lexington and Bowling Green are set to open for the season Saturday. Paducah’s public pool won’t open until June 5 because of a lifeguard shortage. That seems to be a problem for many Parks and Recreation departments across the state. In Covington, the wait is even longer. Public pools there won’t open until June 12.

There is a non-poolside activity for your holiday weekend in far Western Kentucky. A replica of Christopher Columbus’ famed ship, the Pinta, will be open for visitors at Green Turtle Bay in Livingston County. That’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. now through Memorial Day.
