LOUISVILLE, Ky.  Monday marks the deadline to file your taxes. This comes over a month later than normal.

What You Need To Know

  • Monday is Tax Day

  • IRS pushed back the deadline because of a backlog of millions of unprocessed tax returns

  • People can request an extension until Oct. 15

  • Even if you get an extension, any taxes owed are still due Monday

Back in March, the IRS announced it would push back the deadline to file 2020 taxes from April 15 to May 17. That's because the IRS had a backlog of millions of unprocessed tax returns.

This move gave people a little over a month longer than normal to get things in order. However, people can still request an extension to Oct. 15. Even if the extension is granted, any taxes owed still have to be paid by Monday's deadline.

The IRS backlog is still not fully resolved. If you filed recently or plan to file on Monday's deadline, you could see some delays getting your tax returns.

After the IRS announced the delay, Gov. Andy Beshear encouraged the Kentucky Department of Revenue to also extend the 2020 Kentucky income tax filing deadline to May 17.

"As Kentucky families and businesses continue to faithfully follow public health guidance to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus while many are also recovering from widespread natural disasters that have impacted the Commonwealth over the last month, I am pleased to grant some extra time to prepare, file and pay state taxes," said Beshear in March.

Beshear said the Kentucky Department of Revenue is working to process and issue returns promptly.
