LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The nation's small business owners are still fighting the good fight.

What You Need To Know

  • May 2-8 is National Small Business Week

  • Business owners are hopefully turning the corner after battling the COVID-19 pandemic for over a year

  • Logan Street Market opened Oct. 2019

  • Many businesses are dealing with staff shortages

The stifling effects of the pandemic do linger and Chet Marler is more than ready to put fallout from the last year behind him.

“The virus hit and everything, we didn’t really get a chance to shine yet," Marler said. Marler, 37, is the owner of Colonel De's Gourmet Herbs & Spices location inside Louisville's Logan Street Market.

“My best friend is the son of Colonel De and he was, do you want to open up this shot in Louisville? And I was like sure let’s give it a shot," Marler said.

The flagship location is in Cincinnati, Ohio and Marler is set up in Louisville, offering a countless number of spices, herbs, rubs and hard-to-find seasonings. The last month has perhaps been Marler's best yet, certainly since the COVID-19 pandemic first closed down the country last year.

Even as Marler splits his time selling real estate he's definitely ready for more of Colonel De's customers. “As you see things starting to open up, there’s more and more people coming here and I can say.. it’s time, it’s time to go.”

Weekends are the busiest with additional entertainment options for shoppers browsing the more than two-dozen merchants and food vendors spread through the expansive location.

“If you come in on the weekend. You’re going to see a lot of fun," Marler said.
