It was the past year of shutdowns and lockdowns that prompted a Chicago couple with two young children to make a last-minute decision to get in their car and drive to Louisville.

“I’ve always wanted to come to the Derby,” said Jill Kastner.

Her husband, Tom, also had similar aspirations.

“Coming to the Derby is definitely near the top on my bucket list,” he said.

The Kastner’s bought their tickets the Thursday night before the Derby.

“At 10 p.m.,” Tom exclaimed.

Jill and Tom said they entertained the idea of coming with some friends, but when the friends could not make the trip, they decided to bring their son, Jack, 11, and daughter, Anna, 9. The Kastners were eating near the Paddock and taking in their surroundings about five hours before post time for the Derby.

“I’ve always thought The Derby looked so wonderful on TV,” Tom said. “Honestly, it’s much better to see all this in person.”

Jill noted the weather — 72 degrees and sunny — and called it a “great day.”

“Everyone is in a good mood and the buzz here today is just joy,” Tom said. “There’s a lot to be said about that.”
