  • It will be playing 23 Saturday shows this Summer & Fall

  • Jug music was all the rage in Louisville 100 + years ago

  • Founding member says they're sounding better than ever

The members of the Juggernaut Jug Band are back to two rehearsals a week and they are sounding better than ever according to band leader Stu "Roscoe Goose" Helm.

Like all live acts the Juggernauts lost every one of their bookings in 2020 due to the pandemic but as of press time the jug band quartet has 23 lunch cruise performances booked on the Belle of Louisville and the Mary Miller.

“You know there is nothing like looking toward work that wakes you up and says, hey it’s time to get back to work and get our stuff together," Helm said.

Founding member Stu "Roscoe Goose" Helm plays kazoos, snare, trumpet, noise flute, washboard & the jug

The Juggernaut Jug Band was founded in 1965 by "Roscoe Goose," as he prefers to be called. He is the last surviving member. Guitarist "Easy Mark" Ohlson joined about 10 years later. The foursome is rounded out by bassist Keith "Caveman" Hornung and Don " D Man" Oswald. Oswald's late father who went by the same name was another founding member.

Jug music was all the rage in Louisville at the turn of the century and Roscoe Goose says jug bands were a staple of any Derby party and riverboat cruise. Jug music incorporates blues and jazz and of course blowing into great big jugs, think the cartoon jugs of moonshine. The jug sound is supported by an array of guitars, banjos, bass, horns, washboard and bells.
