LEXINGTON, Ky. — With another winter storm coming tomorrow, Lexington prepared for what is coming and dealt with what is already here.
STREETS AND ROADS
Road crews brought in contractors and heavy equipment to help clear snow off major roads. Generally, main roads are passable. Most roads in downtown and near the University of Kentucky campus are clear.
FAYETTE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
All Fayette County Public schools and offices will be closed for the rest of the week, Feb. 17-19, 2021. Students will continue learning through NTI: 2DL. Employees will work remotely.
The severity of the weather is also impacting the school's ability to provide meals on our campuses.
The school district says it understands the weather may cause power outages and/or internet ourtages for both students and teachers. The district will be flexible with anyone impacted by the storm. Any student unable to log-on will be given additional time to complete assignments and any teacher unable to connect will provide instruction at a future time.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Residents helped the police department by staying off the roads, keeping traffic light. Tuesday, Police responded to 11 non-injury collisions, 57 motorist assists, and 18 traffic hazards. Officers continue to monitor roadways for disabled vehicles, downed trees/power lines, and individuals seeking shelter.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Lexington Fire Department responded to 162 incidents, including four injury collisions, a tree falling onto a structure, one transformer fire, and 22 calls from people with injuries on Tuesday. The department has 148 personnel on duty, with all front-line units staffed and operational.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
The City is again suspending waste collection on Wednesday, Feb. 17, because of icy conditions. The city was scheduled to pick up waste on Wednesday that was not picked up on Monday, Feb. 15.
No City carts or dumpsters will be collected on Wednesday. Residents may leave their carts at the curb. A new make-up day has not yet been identified.
WARMING CENTERS
Warming centers will close on Wednesday, but reopen at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Warming centers are located at Dunbar Center, 545 N. Upper Street, and at the Senior Center, located behind Southland Christian Church on Richmond Road. The centers close at 7 p.m.
