LEXINGTON, Ky. — Central Kentuckians are gearing up for the wintry weather.

“We completely sold out of our salt, basically all of our sleds as well,” said Lisa Justice, a hardware store owner in Lexington. “Everyone wants to know if we have the ice melt.”

Justice said this area went through a winter weather event just a couple of weeks ago, as a result, their stockpile was low.

“We’re very lucky cause we’ve got one pallet of ice melt and we’ve got two more on the way,” Justice said. “Today, we’ve got ten calls an hour.”

Justice and her husband, John, own Chevy Chase Hardware off of High Street.

One by one customers are entering the small hardware shop hoping to pre-treat their driveways or sidewalks.

“The biggest thing is to prepare for the storm you know,” John said. “The challenge is once the storm gets here then a lot of it sells out quickly and then we don’t have enough to supply everyone.”

Across the region, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 7, which covers Lexington, said they’re paying closer attention to the weather and having crews on standby if deemed necessary to treat roads.

“It’s good to be prepared in Kentucky because you never know what kind of weather we’re going to get in the winter. so stocking up and having the ice melt ready at home is always a good idea,” Lisa said.

The central Kentucky region is expected to see some snow and ice mixture later in the week. For more safety information on how to prepare for a storm, you can visit our Winter Weather Guide.
