LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time in program history, University of Louisville women's basketball ranked No. 1 in the latest Associated Press poll Monday afternoon.

"It’s a great honor," said head coach Jeff Walz. "Obviously it doesn’t do you anything come March, but it’s something that we’re proud of, because we have sustained something here for 14 years. It’s been a lot of hard work and we’ve had a lot of great players and a great staff. And not only do we win some ballgames, but I think we win our community, we win in public. Our players are wonderful young women that represent our athletic department to the fullest."
The Cards made program history before their No. 1 ranking when they stayed at No. 2 in the AP poll for the last six weeks, the most consecutive weeks the team has been in the spot.
Louisville won against Florida state 84-56 on Sunday afternoon, moving 12-0 on the year. Last week's No. 1 team, Stanford, opened up the No. 1 spot when it fell 77-72 in overtime at Colorado.
The Cardinals will host Syracuse on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET before traveling to play at Wake Forest Sunday.
