LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In only a few months the McAtee Community Kitchen has delivered thousands of free meals to families on Louisville’s west end. The organization was founded in honor of David McAtee who was shot and killed by a Kentucky National Guardsmen on June 1. 

“We branch off The Lee Initiative. This is a program they started to try and help the communities in the west end," Kelsey Preuss told Spectrum News 1 on Thursday. 

Preuss is the communications and operations manager of the McAtee Community Kitchen. Five days a week meals are prepared and packaged for families in neighborhoods surrounding where David McAtee ran a barbecue stand for many years. 

On Thursday another organization, SOS International delivered thousands of items of PPE for the McAtee kitchen staff. 

“Even in the best of times I think it’s important that organizations like ours come together but particularly now, where our city has gone through some painful times over the past couple of months," Denise Sears said. 

Sears is the President and CEO of SOS, a non-profit organization that redistributes unused, surplus medical and health care supplies around the world. 

“To be able to show how when you come together, you can create positivity is something I think we are all craving.” 

“Craving,” is a good word to describe Louisville at this moment. There are residents craving equal opportunity and change and organizations like SOS and McAtee Community Kitchen are helping to make change happen. One kitchen staffer said, “It’s very rewarding to give back in this way."
