Tuesday night, the Jefferson County Board of Education approved Superintendent Marty Pollio's recommendation to extend NTI for all students through late October. Pollio made his recommendation last week, where he also outlined a plan for a staggered return to in-person classes should COVID-19 numbers improve.
JCPS students will now continue with NTI until at least Oct. 22. Sometime in mid-October, according to a letter sent to JCPS families and students, the Board will hold a meeting to consider whether or not NTI will be extended even further.
"If there is a significant drop in local COVID-19 cases in the first few weeks of October, JCPS schools will be prepared to let students back into classrooms October 22nd beginning with Pre-K and elementary school students," says the letter.
The plan that Pollio outlined last week includes elementary school students returning first Oct. 22 followed by middle school students Oct. 29 and high school students Nov. 2. Pollio said that plan will require a decline in cases, a future Board meeting and a vote.
Jefferson County is listed as an orange county according to the Kentucky Department for Public Health, meaning there are 10-25 positive COVID-19 cases for every 100,000 people. The guidance for orange counties, Pollio said while making his recommendation, is to continue with NTI.
