LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Historic Wagner’s Pharmacy has stood across from Churchill Downs for nearly 100 years, serving as a gathering place for thousands of people on a normal Derby Week. This year's Derby, however, is anything but normal.
Exact plans for the popular hangout are still up in the air.
“In the past, we’re usually packed for two weeks before the Derby happens,” Pamela Pryor, kitchen manager for Wagner's, told Spectrum News 1.
Pryor is about to spend her 21st Derby working at Wagner’s.
“As long as there is no problem going on, yes, we will be open,” Pryor said.
Weeks away from the 146th Derby, uncertainty still lingers at Wagner's.
“They used to have, where you set out and have beers, beverages to buy. I don’t know if they are going to do that this year,” employee Lisa Breckenridge said.
Wagner’s owner, Lee Wagner tells Spectrum News 1 that per an agreement, Churchill Downs operates most of the parking lot area surrounding his establishment. According to Wagner, he’s waiting for guidance from Churchill Downs officials on whether any sponsored Derby events will happen at Wagner's this Labor Day weekend.
