KENTUCKY — More than fifty community radio stations nationwide, including three in Kentucky, joined forces to pay tribute to the life of Breonna Taylor and several other African-American women who have been taken from their families too soon.
Thursday marked the five-month anniversary of Taylor's death, and to honor her, two community radio stations in Lexington and one in Louisville paused their regular broadcasts to recognize Taylor along with other women.
For ten minutes, Louisville’s 97.1 WXOX honored Taylor by playing her favorite song “Everything,” which was released in 1997 from R&B singer Mary J. Blige.
Also included in the broadcast was a message from Taylor's family that was dedicated to those who demand justice and stand for equality.
“Hi, everyone. My name is Bianca Austin and I’m Breonna’s aunt, and on behalf of our family, we want to thank everyone for standing with us as we fight for justice for Breonna. Justice for Breonna means an end to police brutality and social injustice. We will not tolerate this any longer. The time is now,” said Austin, whose message was shared during the tribute.
“We just want to say that we would like everybody to continue to say her name and follow that hashtag, use that hashtag saying her name. Continue to say all their names because there's so many who need to understand the pandemic that this is,“ explained Tia Coately, who directly worked with Breonna’s family on the production of the nationwide simulcast.
Coately also says her radio station is already looking at other future collaboration events to continue advocating for justice for Breonna Taylor and raising awareness on issues of systemic racism and police brutality against Black women across the country.
