LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Marking the second day of sickouts, roughly 27 Louisville Metro Police Department officers called in sick today.

What You Need To Know

  • LMPD officers call in sick

  • Officers were from Louisville's third, fourth, fifth, sixth divisions

  • FOP does not support the sick out

The officers who called in as of 7:30 a.m. were from LMPD's fourth, fifth and sixth divisions. Officers from other divisions were relocated to assist in the impacted areas.

This follows yesterday's sickout where LMPD officers from the third division, which covers the southern part of Jefferson County, staged a sickout.

LMPD confirmed Tuesday that officers called out sick before their shift began. LMPD spokeswoman Jessie Halladay said a few reported for duty later in the day. Halladay said all calls for service were handled as needed.

The "Blue Flu" comes as officers deal with continuing protests for justice in the death of Breonna Taylor in downtown Louisville.

Halladay said, "This is a difficult time for our city – for officers and residents. Over the past month, officers have been asked to work many extra hours, as LMPD continues its commitment to protecting people’s First Amendment right to protest, while also working to protect everyone. "

Monday night, Louisville's Fraternal Order of Police posted its opposition to any sickout on Facebook. FOP President Ryan Nichols said the sickout was a response to decisions made by upper command and Mayor Greg Fischer but said the FOP does not support the actions of the officers.
