KENTON COUNTY, Ky. — Voters in Northern Kentucky experienced an unusual Primary Day as the coronavirus pandemic caused several new changes and adjustments.

  • Northern Kentucky experiences relatively smooth Primary Day despite pandemic

  • Kenton County had only one polling location, several drop boxes

  • Two polling locations in Boone County

Despite the fact that Kenton County only had one polling place at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center, several voters said their experience was quick.

"Well, I know the people at my polling place, but this was really smooth," said Robby Sweetser who voted today. "I was in and out of here in three or four minutes, so I thought it was a great experience."

Kenton County Clerk Gabrielle Summe has been planning for this day for months; however, she said it was harder to only have one polling location.

"It is easier to have 105 precincts and train 650 poll workers than to have one location and do that kind of heavy lifting for mailing out ballots and receiving back in," Summe said.

The heavy lifting, Summe said, is primarily because of how state law is setup.

"One of the things the county clerks when we were discussing about mail out ballots, because Kentucky is not built for mail in ballots, and a lot of people don't trust the mail or feel like the post office might to slow, so we felt like we had to give them an option that made them feel like something was done, and we fought really hard to have drop boxes," said Summe.

Drop boxes were available at several locations across the county.

Boone County found itself in a similar situation as it downsized to two precincts rather than 63.

"Well, the big space is nice cause we can handle a tremendous amount of people. Having extra voting machines has also been tremendously helpful for easy in and out and the volume control," said Boone County Clerk Justin Crigler. "We were concerned about it first, but we have been clearing traffic lickedy split, so it's been an exciting time and we learned a lot of things by doing that."
