  • Statue to be relocated to Todd County

The Historic Properties Advisory Commission voted to remove the statue, following a request by Gov. Andy Beshear (D).

The Jefferson Davis statue has been in the Capitol rotunda since 1936 and even had a plaque describing the Confederate president as a hero. The plaque was removed in 2018.

Beshear has been calling for the removal of the statue since last week.

"What it’ll mean is that we get a little closer to truly being Team Kentucky," Beshear said in a statement posted to Youtube. "That every child that walks into this capitol feels welcome, and none of them have to look at a symbol and a statue that stands for the enslavement of their ancestors."

Crews have been working since Friday morning at the Capitol, prepping for the statue to come down, but there has been no official word on when the monument will be removed.

The statue will be moved to the Jefferson Davis monument in Todd County, where Davis was born.
