LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After closing due to COVID-19, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) announced May 22 that it served its one millionth free meal for students at one of its emergency food sites.
Officials also announced that students can continue to receive free meals throughout the summer.
“JCPS employees have stepped up and continued to provide services that have become even more vital as families suffer through this pandemic,” JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said. “In some cases, the meals our Nutrition Services staff are delivering to children are the only full meals they receive each week.”
JCPS, which closed March 16, has served breakfast and lunch at emergency food sites since its closure and expanded the number of pick up locations.
Initially, JCPS Nutrition Services provided roughly 2,500 meals at the program's start. Now, on average, more than 10,500 students receive meals each day the sites are open.
“Nutrition Services is proud to help our families by providing meals during this unprecedented pandemic,” said Julia Bauscher, executive administrator of JCPS School & Community Nutrition Services. “I am especially proud of the many school nutrition workers who are working to assemble, deliver and distribute the meals to our students and other children in the community. We plan to continue to provide meals for as long as there is a need.”
After remote learning ends May 27, any student 18 years old or younger can receive breakfast and lunch at more than 60 locations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays under USDA waiver extensions. The program will continue through Aug. 31.
