LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a normal year, everyone would be gearing up for Thunder Over Louisville and the Kentucky Derby. But 2020 is anything but normal right now.

The Kentucky Derby Museum wants to bring a little bit of normalcy to the city and help a pair of funds assisting during the coronavirus pandemic.

The museum opened a website to sell Derby 146 merchandise featuring the original May 2, 2020 date. More than 300 items will be on sale beginning Wednesday, April 15 through Sunday, May 3. 20 percent of sales proceeds will benefit Governor Andy Beshear's #TeamKentucky fund and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer's One Louisville: COVID-19 Response Fund.

The merchandise includes t-shirts, polo shirts, and other apparel, hats, accessories, glassware, home decor, and other items.

Also included as part of the sale are Kentucky Oaks and Derby glasses.

“Due to its wide availability, the official glass has always been popular with collectors,” said Chris Goodlett, Director of Curatorial and Educational Affairs.

The Kentucky Oaks and Derby will now be run Labor Day weekend.

“As a major local retail arm of all official Kentucky Derby merchandise, we find ourselves in the unique position of offering Kentucky Derby glasses, wearables, and other merchandise branded with the date of May 2, 2020. This moment in time represents a historically significant point in our lives,” said Patrick Armstrong, CEO Kentucky Derby Museum.

Armstrong says the balance of the proceeds will go to the Museum and its efforts to educate students in Kentucky about the importance of the Derby.
