LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Louisville took thousands of fake IDs off the hands of a 'Trusted Traveler' suspect in a bust that spanned the last six months. There was also blank card stock to make counterfeit driver's licenses in the package flown from China. Officers are celebrating the interception they say makes Kentuckians safer, from preventing identity theft, maintaining national security, and keeping underage teens from buying alcohol and tobacco.
"We are pretty much the last line of defense as it relates to shipment coming from overseas, so if we don't stop these shipments they it the street and affect American lives," says Louisville Port Director Thomas Mahn, "it's all about stopping the bad guy and stuff that's coming into the country that can do harm."
For at least one liquor store in Louisville, the bust has them on high alert to continue carefully checking IDs of customers.
"It’s hard to tell like how old’s the person and I don’t want to lose my license because of that problem," Bourbon Liquor Palace Owner Bhanubhai Patel says. His store is nearly on the University of Louisville's campus.
Over the last six months, CBP says they've seized 28 fake birth certificates, 5,063 counterfeit driver’s licenses, and 46 fraudulent passports. They "remain diligent" in searching for counterfeit identification.
