LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kentucky Sports Radio Host Matt Jones is off the air in light of a Federal Election Commission complaint from the Republican Party of Kentucky.
Jones announced iHeart Radio has asked him to take a leave from the show after the complaint alleged he is violating campaign regulations by the radio company.
Jones said on Kentuckysportsradio.com McConnell is behind the complaint.
The complaint is absolute nonsense and very disappointing from someone as powerful as McConnell.
“The complaint is absolute nonsense and very disappointing from someone as powerful as McConnell,” Jones wrote on the blog.
McConnell’s campaign, however, says they do not care whether Jones is on air or not.
"Team Mitch has absolutely no concern about Matt's show,” Campaign Manager Kevin Golden said in a statement. “It appears that his business relationships are concerned with his ability to comply with federal law."
The complaint says Jones’ statewide tour is linked to his campaign and Simon & Schuster are funding it and failing to report expenditures related to his show and statewide tour promoting his campaign.
“Matt Jones must be held accountable immediately for misusing multiple platforms paid for by his corporate sponsors to unlawfully promote his U.S. Senate candidacy,” said RPK Chairman J. McCauley Brown in a statement. “In stark contrast to Jones’ candor about Amy McGrath’s authenticity problems, his attempts to conceal these violations from both the FEC and the public only heighten their severity. RPK’s complaint is an important first step in stopping Jones’ flagrant failure to comply with federal regulations and we urge the FEC to deliver a swift and strong penalty.”
Jones has not yet filed to run for the U.S. Senate seat to challenge Mitch McConnell but has formed an exploratory committee, Jones says he will be making his decision whether to run soon.
“If I choose in the coming days not to run, I hope to extend my deal with iHeart Radio and continue KSR into the future,” Jones wrote.
His suspension from KSR has caused the hashtag #FreeMattJones to trend on Twitter with many users calling foul on McConnell's abdication of responsibility of the lawsuit. Former Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Adam Edelen weighed in saying this type of politics is why people shy away from politics.
