LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. - A video posted to Anderson County High School's Facebook page is sparking debate from both sides.

Hundreds of users on Facebook have left comments about a ‘Make America Great Again Trump Those Patriots’ sign that Anderson County cheerleaders were seen holding during pre-game festivities of the Anderson County versus Lincoln County homecoming football game Friday night.

Some of the people who complained about the use of the banner shared that the sign was too political in nature for a high school football game.

Anderson County High School Superintendent Sheri Mitchell released a statement on the students use of the banner:

"Last week Anderson County Schools had a focus on high attendance, encouraging all students to be present at school and setting an attendance goal. If students achieved 100% attendance for the week, they received a bracelet that granted them free entry into Friday night’s Homecoming football game.  Anderson County High School had spirit week leading up to the Homecoming festivities including the parade, football game and school dance. As part of spirit week, ACHS students selected a daily theme to generate involvement. This is a tradition at Anderson County High School. The theme for Friday’s game was the patriotic “America Out” where students wore red, white and blue to the game, flew their own American flag in the student section, and welcomed the team to the field flying the American flag. Students created a banner utilizing a popular campaign slogan of the sitting President of the United States which has become a very commonly used pop culture reference. The banner stated:  “Make America Great Again, Trump Those Patriots.” (Note: The mascot for the opposing team was the Patriots).  Students indicate that the banner was a design found on Pinterest that was a play on words that matched the patriotic theme and not meant to be a political statement.

Counsel for the Board of Education has advised:  “While the banner utilized President Trump’s campaign slogan from the 2016 election, the banner facially stood as a negation of any political view.  Read literally, the banner suggested the way to make America great again was to have the hometown team win its homecoming game, rather than having anything to do with the goings-on in Washington, D.C.  To our knowledge the involved students took the banner language in the spirit intended as stated above, while apparently numerous adults did not. No disciplinary action is warranted against anyone involved in this banner matter.

Any complaints will be addressed by the Superintendent of schools in coordination with legal council."
