WASHINGTON, DC -  A grassroots political action committee launched a campaign called “Better than Bevin” this week.

The People’s Campaign says they are on a mission to change politics and policy in ways they believe will improve the lives of working people in Kentucky.

The organizers behind the initiative, including local radio host Clark Williams, posted a video to YouTube featuring a math teacher whose student was murdered over the summer. According to the teacher, Kumar Rasahd, his student told the educator he didn’t want to leave school because he didn’t have a way to occupy himself for the summer. Soon after, Rashad says, the boy was killed. The video aims to take a dig at Republican Governor Matt Bevin for his strained relationship with Kentucky’s teachers. It goes on to endorse Democrat Attorney General Andy Beshear for governor.

Williams says the group plans to circulate the video online. Five other videos will be posted in the coming weeks. He explained it’s all in effort to ramp up  enthusiasm for voters who lean towards Democrats but tend to sit out in off year elections. The group estimates there are about 190,000 Kentuckians across 29 counties who don’t typically show up at the polls for statewide races.

Governor Bevin’s reelection campaign could not be reached for comment.
