COVINGTON, Ky. - Construction gets underway next week in Covington on the long-awaited Riverfront Commons.
Construction crews will begin fencing off the area under the Roebling Suspension Bridge and setting up barriers to prevent construction site debris from washing into the Ohio River.
What this means for residents is simple; once construction begins cars will no longer be able to park in the lot under the bridge.
"This is it, the highlight of Riverfront Commons, the 'crown jewel,' the most visually appealing piece of the 2.7-mile trail in Covington," said Covington Public Works Director Rick Davis, who has been working for years to obtain permits, funding, and finalized engineering plans for the project.
This is a $6.54 million Phase II of Covington's part of Riverfront Commons. Six river cities will be linked with an uninterrupted 11.5-mile path from Fort Thomas to Ludlow.
Phase II stretches from Greenup to just west of the Madison Overlook and will include:
- A 1,350-seat amphitheater
- Two concrete paths for walkers, bicyclists, and runners. The paths will link up to a concrete path on the west side of RiverCenter
- A cobblestone "pier" for fishermen and those who would like to kayak or canoe on the river
- Upgraded overlooks at the foot of Madison Avenue
Davis says the project might be finished by the fall of 2020.
