LOUISVILLE, KY- Even in a controlled setting, the "Use of Force" simulator at Louisville Metro Police Department's training facility is adrenaline enducing.
Earlier this year the academy was gifted two simulators. Already, the gift has impacted hundreds of officers. The equipment uses life-scale and interactive videos to place officers in a vast range of situations.
Mock service pistols and pepper spray canisters use lasers to show accuracy if an officer uses force.
"Everybody gets something from this," says Officer Rich Wilson. "No matter what level you are in, whether you know nothing about law enforcement or you are an 18 to 20, to 25-year seasoned veteran. This type of machine has so many different scenarios, so many different outcomes," Wilson adds.
The scenarios are nerve rattling but they can and do happen every day for officers across the commonwealth. The simulators cost an estimated $75,000.
“The police foundation was able to get it through the generosity of a single donor who wanted to remain anonymous," says Tracie Shugart of the LMPD Foundation. You encounter use-of-force situations and you need to know how to react to those situations and whenever anything goes bad you always resort back to training," Shugart tells Spectrum News 1.
