LOUISVILLE, Ky. - There's a new plan to get more African American teachers into Kentucky classrooms. Jefferson County Public Schools is teaming up with Simmons College, the only historically black college in Louisville.
Beginning this fall, students will be able to take a one-year course called Transition to Teaching. Undergraduate students will get help studying for the Praxis Exam, the exam all Kentucky teachers must pass in order to be certified.
Graduate students will be able to work as long-term substitute teachers in JCPS school and students will also get to meet with mentors who are already working in classrooms.
Right now, 35 percent of JCPS students are African American, compare that to the 12 percent of teachers. If you or someone you know is interested in the program, click HERE.
