LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Louisville Zoo guests have cast their votes and the decision is in!

Meet Groot!

Groot is the newest member of the Louisville Zoo.  The baby boy bongo was born on May 19. 

There were close to 2,000 name submissions for the public naming contest, the zoo narrowed it down to the top three for visitors to make the final selection.  All three names came from the Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy. Along with Groot, zoo visitors were asked to choose between Rocket and Drax. Zoo guests voted by dropping cash and coins into kiosks for their favorite names.  Groot beat Rocket by $4.

Karen Yarborough of Virginia was the lucky winner of the contest.  There were multiple submissions for the name Groot, so the zoo drew Yarborough's name randomly.  She wins a behind-the-scenes tour for winning the contest.

 Guests can visit Groot in the zoo's exhibit with his mother Isabelle.
