UPDATE - The executive director tells Spectrum News 1 that as of Wednesday, "A benefactor is helping us replace our tools...” and that news coverage played a role for the person to come forward.

HENDERSON, Ky -- A Western Kentucky non-profit organization that builds homes for needy families is in need itself.

Thieves broke into a trailer Sunday evening, owned by the Habitat for Humanity of Henderson and stole thousands of dollars worth of tools.

According to Habitat for Humanity, the thieves cut around the lock to get inside the trailer.

Habitat officials say the trailer was parked at a site for a new home build in Henderson's East End.

The theft was discovered and reported to police on Monday.

Habitat officials say about $10,000 worth of tools, critical to building homes, were taken.

The executive director says she was very angry when she first learned about the theft.

Habitat for Humanity Executive director Britney Smith now says she is sad someone would feel the need to steal from Habitat.

She says the organization has three housing builds in the works which could be delayed up to three weeks or more if Habitat doesn't get the tools it needs.

Nearby Madsonville Habitat for Humanity has offered to lend Henderson some equipment.

She says a Go-Fund Me site has been set up to take donations. You can find it here.
