FRANKFORT -- Starting in October 2020, Kentuckians won't be able to get through TSA with their current driver's license.

Instead they will need a Real ID approved license- which Kentucky is calling a Voluntary ID.

There will also be what's called a Standard ID, which will be cheaper but won't let people fly or enter some federal buildings.

At a committee meeting about Real ID in August, Republican Sal Santoro from Northern Kentucky voiced major concerns about the naming of the cards. “What I’m worried about- when this ID comes out, the new one, is it going to say on there ‘Not for travel’? I mean, I just see Grandma getting to the greater Cincinnati airport to travel and she has the wrong license."

State lawmakers received another update on the Real ID program at a meeting in Monticello on Wednesday. After that meeting, another lawmaker is voicing concerns about the program. Democrat Representative Steve Riggs “For a governor who prides himself on removing regulations, I cannot fathom why he thinks creating two types of driver’s licenses is a positive move.”  Riggs continued, saying "It’s duplicative, wasteful, confusing and more expensive.  My hope is that we eventually come to our senses and make it so there is only one type of driver’s license.  We need the stronger form of identification that keeps us safer, and it’s a heck of a lot easier to understand.”

“For some reason, the cabinet has chosen to call these the ‘Standard Credential’ and the ‘Voluntary Travel ID,’” Rep. Riggs said.  “Those getting or renewing their licenses will be confused about which one to get.  I guarantee many with the standard credential will almost certainly be upset when they find out they can no longer use it to board a plane or enter a federal government facility like Fort Knox or Fort Campbell down the road.  The cabinet should call these a ‘standard’ and a ‘substandard’ ID, because that’s what they are.”

Kentucky's Voluntary ID will be available starting in January 2019. It will cost more than the Standard ID, but will allow people to fly. People will be able to choose if they want a license for eight years or for four. People who choose the Standard ID will need to bring a passport or other federally approved credential to board any flight or get on to military bases.
