1. Lexington police partner with mental health experts for crisis response

Lexington launched its Community Crisis Co-response team, consisting of a mental health professional and 45 specially trained police officers. The goal is to connect someone in crisis with resources more efficiently. 

2. H-L: Asthmatic boy was pepper sprayed then left in cell at KY juvenile justice center

According to our partner, the Herald-Leader, the facility’s staff explained later they had no clear understanding of when to use pepper spray, a last-resort defensive measure that Gov. Andy Beshear authorized for the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice in Jan, 2023.

3. Louisville's pet store ordinance just days away from taking effect

Beginning Sept. 28, Louisville pet stores will no longer be allowed to sell dogs and cats under an ordinance that was passed in Sept. 2023. Frankfort recently passed a similar ordinance, and Lexington's ban goes into effect Nov. 1, 2024.
