The countdown to midnight is approaching, and for the first time, Lexington will usher in the new year with a Times Square-style celebration.

It all comes together for the kick-off of the city’s 250th anniversary.

Eunice Beatty is a Lexington native, and a retired University of Kentucky educator who now spends much of her time helping behind the scenes. Now, serving as a 250Lex commission co-chair.

Beatty said her anticipation has grown since embarking on a year full of celebration planning.

“It was exciting just because in Lexington, we just don’t have winter outdoor events and when we started planning it to be outdoors and in front of a facility like the Central Bank Center, it was just exciting. From the very first moment as we started planning.” Beatty said.

Games, inflatables, and more will be in a specific area for families of all ages from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Festivities for adults start at 9 p.m. leading into a countdown of the new year.

With a team of over 25 members ensuring plans are set, Beatty said this is a moment for everyone to reflect on the city—past and present.

“I just couldn’t say no to the 250th birthday. It really is an opportunity when you are a native Lexingtonian. This is a once in a generation kind of experience” Beatty explained.

Visitors coming out will find parking available at the High Street parking lot across from Rupp Arena with an hourly charge.

The city encourages carpooling and ride-sharing. A location will be designated for those who do so off Vine Street.

Vendors, food and drinks will be available and a clear bag policy will be enforced.
