KENTUCKY — On this week’s “In Focus Kentucky” program, we’re sitting down one-on-one with Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman.
During this segment, Lt. Gov. Coleman, D-Ky., discusses her personal experience with breast cancer screenings and the importance of making appointments and showing up for them. In Dec. 2023, Coleman announced a clean report after undergoing a double mastectomy, just weeks after sharing publicly that she had undergone the procedure, citing a “significant family history of cancer.” She underwent the procedures just days after her second inauguration as Lieutenant Governor.
“Well, I’m doing great, and thank you for asking, and I’m doing great because I scheduled my screening when I was supposed to, and I showed up, and when I got news that wasn’t great, I decided to make the most aggressive decision that I could, because I went home and had a three-year-old running around the house, and that made it, I think, even more special to me and even more important to me. But I will say that, as someone who has a family history of breast cancer, that is pretty discouraging. I knew that I had to be on top of these screenings, and I knew that I had to make sure that I was doing the things I needed to do, to take care of myself, so that I can take care of other people, and that’s what we’re here to remind folks about in October, if women have not scheduled those screenings, please schedule them and please make sure you show up. I did my very first screening during our reelection campaign. And so if I can do that and make time for that, then I know you can too, and it was the most important, best decision I’ve ever made,” said Lt. Gov. Coleman.
