BELLEVUE, Ky. — Before Cher and Madonna, there was the original one-name-only celebrity, Barbie. The Mattel creation is making a Malibu-like splash this weekend in movie theaters across the country. The City of Bellevue hopes to cash in on the Barbie-mania.
Kelly Schneider Morgan is serving up Barbie-inspired ice cream at Schneider’s Sweet shop. The business owner says she’s been a Barbie fan for years.
Schneider Morgan said, “It was just a way for me to express my dreams and live your life through Barbie when you’re a little girl and you can be whatever you want and you can make that Barbie whatever you want.”
Big Barbie dreams aren’t limited to the sweet shop. Melissa Morandi, the marketing director for the City of Bellevue, says residents and visitors need to keep an eye out for a life-sized Barbie box making its way around town. The big box will allow every Barbie and Ken wannabe to see what it’s like to be a living doll.
“Wherever I can sprinkle a little magic into my job, that’s the best for me. Just to see everyone smile and they see something fun and pink and something they can take part in,” Morandi said.
Morandi and other city leaders, including Mayor Charlie Cleves, worked together to bring the big screen fun to life. The town wanted to see if it could recreate the fun and excitement that happened when Taylor Swift brought her tour to Cincinnati.
“It brought so many people to Bellevue that we had places packed,” Cleves said.
Schneider Morgan echoed the mayor’s sentiments. Business was booming for the show and she’s hoping Barbie does the same thing.
“Especially when you own a small business and you work and it’s hard work all the time, when you can break in something super fun like that it’s great. It’s fun to see all the new people come in,” Schneider Morgan said. She added, “It’s kind of a win for everybody.”
Look for the Barbie box around Bellevue for the next couple of weeks, according to Morandi.
