  • The district previously cut transportation for around 14,000 students who attended magnet and traditional schools

  • Thirty-one bus drivers have been licensed through a partnership with the Transit Authority of River City

  • Pollio says there is no timeline on when the required number of bus drivers will be reached

Earlier this year, JCPS cut transportation for around 14,000 students who attended magnet and traditional schools. The only magnet schools that continued to have bus service were Western High School and Central High School.

JCPS partnered with the Transit Authority of River City, Louisville’s primary public transportation provider, to train TARC bus drivers as school bus drivers. Transportation services to some students can be returned once 60 total former TARC drivers are properly licensed through the partnership.

Pollio says so far, 31 drivers have been licensed and for now, he says he is pleased with buses dropping students off on time. “It doesn’t mean there can’t be instances of late buses from time to time, but we’re not having those situations and until we have the bus drivers that we are prepared to add back without impacting students being late to school, we can’t make that decision,” he explained.

He says there is no timeline on when the required number of bus drivers will be reached.

Anyone interested in applying for a position, can do so on the JCPS website.
